HIKING

Yancey County has the highest average elevation of any county in NC, including within its boundaries five of the highest peaks east of the Mississippi. One of these peaks is Mount Mitchell, the highest point in eastern America, with an elevation of 6,684 feet. The county is also skirted by the Appalachian Trail and surrounded by protected national forests.
