Donald Davis was born in a Southern Appalachian mountain world rich in stories, surrounded by a family of traditional storytellers who told him gentle fairy tales, simple and silly Jack tales, scary mountain lore, ancient Welsh and Scottish folktales, and most importantly, nourishing, true-to-life stories of his own neighbors and kin.

During his twenty-five year career as a United Methodist Minister, Davis began to use stories more and more.  He was also asked to begin performing at festivals and in other settings until he retired from the church to tell stories full time.

Davis has become one of only a handful of storytellers to achieve permanent Featured Teller status at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Along with being a favorite at the National Storytelling Festival, he has served as a featured teller at the Smithsonian Institute and the World’s Fair. Davis is the recipient of both the ORACLE Circle of Excellence and the Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Storytelling Network and has been the guest host for NPR’s Good Evening.

Featured at festivals throughout the United States and internationally, Davis is also known as a prolific writer. He is the author of eighteen books and more than forty original recordings.

ABOUT PIONEER LIFE:  Our mission is to preserve the legacy of the pioneer families who settled this region and experience how they lived.

We are creating a center for experiential education where visitors will learn how pioneer families lived as they take an interactive journey through time. We envision a model subsistence farm brimming with activities and learning opportunities while also providing a high-quality academic and research environment.
